SSAT Upper Level Practice Test

The SSAT Upper Level is a 3-hour and 5-minute exam (plus a brief break) consisting of five sections: Writing Sample (25 minutes, unscored but sent to schools), Quantitative (two sections, 25 minutes each), Reading Comprehension (40 minutes), and Verbal (30 minutes). The Quantitative, Reading, and Verbal sections are multiple-choice and contribute to the total scaled score, which ranges from 1500 to 2400.

The SSAT employs a scaled scoring system. You earn one point for each correct answer, lose a quarter point for each incorrect answer, and receive no points for unanswered questions. This 'guessing penalty' means strategic answering is crucial; it discourages random guessing but rewards educated guesses when you can eliminate one or more answer choices.

Admissions committees use SSAT scores as one component of a holistic review. Your scores provide a standardized data point to compare academic readiness across applicants from different schools. They are considered alongside your grades, teacher recommendations, personal essay, extracurricular activities, and interview. You can take the SSAT on multiple standard national test dates throughout the academic year (e.g., October, November, December, January). It is advisable to take your first exam in the fall of the year you are applying, allowing time for a retake if desired. You can take the SSAT multiple times, and most schools will consider your highest score, though some may review all scores.
