TOPIK I (Beginner — Levels 1–2) Practice Test

TOPIK I is a 100-minute, paper-based test consisting of two sections: Listening (40 minutes, 30 questions) and Reading (60 minutes, 40 questions), for a total of 70 multiple-choice questions. All instructions and questions are presented in Korean. The exam progressively assesses comprehension of basic vocabulary, grammar, and the ability to understand short dialogues, announcements, and written texts on everyday topics.

The total possible score is 200 points (100 each for Listening and Reading). A candidate's level is determined by the total score: a score between 80 and 139 points certifies Level 1, while a score of 140 points or higher certifies Level 2. There is no separate 'pass/fail'; certification is awarded based on the level achieved.

TOPIK I is designed for absolute beginners and elementary learners. It is essential for individuals applying for Korean language courses at universities, those seeking a D-4 student visa for language training, candidates for certain international marriage visas (F-6), and anyone needing to formally document basic Korean skills for employment in entry-level service or hospitality roles connected to Korea.

The TOPIK certificate has no official expiration date; however, some institutions (like universities or immigration offices) may require results from a test taken within the last two years. The exam is typically administered six times per year in South Korea and approximately five times per year at test centers worldwide. Candidates should check the official TOPIK website for the specific schedule in their country.

Official preparation should center on materials from the National Institute for International Education (NIIED), including past exam papers and the official exam guide. Utilizing integrated Korean language textbooks for beginners (such as '서강 한국어' or '연세 한국어') is recommended. Supplementing with vocabulary lists for the beginner level, grammar guides, and consistent practice with listening comprehension exercises tailored to the exam format is crucial for success.
