UPSC Civil Services Preliminary Examination Practice Test

The Prelims consists of two compulsory papers: General Studies Paper-I (100 questions, 200 marks) and CSAT (Civil Services Aptitude Test) Paper-II (80 questions, 200 marks). Both are objective-type (MCQs). Paper-I marks determine qualification for the Mains, while Paper-II is qualifying in nature (33% minimum). There is a penalty of 1/3rd mark for each wrong answer in both papers. Only the marks of Paper-I are considered for the Prelims cutoff.

The number of attempts varies by category: General category candidates have 6 attempts up to age 32. OBC candidates have 9 attempts up to age 35. SC/ST candidates have unlimited attempts up to age 37. Candidates with benchmark disabilities have age relaxations and additional attempts as per government norms. Attempts are counted only if a candidate appears for at least one paper in the Prelims.

Prelims preparation focuses on factual accuracy, speed, and the ability to eliminate incorrect options through conceptual clarity. It requires a broad overview of many subjects. Mains preparation, for which Prelims is a filter, demands in-depth knowledge, analytical writing, essay construction, and the ability to present arguments coherently. While the syllabus overlaps, the depth and output required are fundamentally different. A successful Prelims strategy is the essential foundation for Mains preparation.

Current affairs are critically important and integrated across the General Studies Paper-I syllabus, especially in sections like Polity, Economy, Environment, and Science & Technology. Typically, a significant percentage of questions are directly or indirectly linked to events of national and international importance from the preceding 12-18 months. A consistent, analytical reading of newspapers, monthly magazines, and government reports (like Economic Survey, Budget) is indispensable for success.

The question papers for the Prelims are set bilingually in English and Hindi. However, requests can be made to the Commission to provide the question paper in any one of the scheduled languages listed in the Eighth Schedule of the Constitution for the Prelims. It is crucial to specify this choice carefully while filling the application form.
