AANP Family Nurse Practitioner Certification (FNP-C) Practice Test

Candidates must hold an active, unrestricted RN license and have successfully completed an accredited graduate, post-graduate, or doctoral FNP program that includes both didactic education and supervised clinical practice hours. The program must encompass comprehensive coursework in advanced health assessment, pathophysiology, pharmacology, and diagnosis and management across the lifespan. Both are nationally recognized certifications for Family Nurse Practitioners. The AANP FNP-C is offered by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners and is exclusively focused on clinical knowledge and skills relevant to direct patient care and diagnosis. The ANCC FNP-BC, offered by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, includes questions on nursing theory, research, and professional role development in addition to clinical content. The choice often depends on state board requirements, employer preferences, and the individual practitioner's focus, though both credentials meet the standard for licensure and practice.

The FNP-C exam is a computer-based test consisting of 150 questions, of which 135 are scored. The 15 pre-test questions are unscored and used for future exam development. The exam is administered over a 3-hour period. Questions are primarily multiple-choice with a single best answer, presented in a scenario-based format that tests clinical judgment and application of knowledge. The FNP-C certification is valid for five years. Recertification can be achieved through one of two pathways: 1) Accumulation of a minimum of 100 contact hours of continuing education (CE) relevant to family practice, including 25 hours in pharmacotherapeutics, and meeting a minimum practice hour requirement (1,000 clinical hours as an FNP within the 5-year cycle); or 2) Retaking and passing the current FNP-C certification examination. The content blueprint is your essential roadmap. Allocate study time proportionally to the weight of each domain. Focus heavily on 'Assessment and Diagnosis' and 'Plan of Care' domains, as they comprise the majority of the exam. Within these, prioritize high-prevalence conditions (e.g., HTN, Diabetes, COPD, Depression) and lifespan-specific care (e.g., pediatric growth, geriatric syndromes, women's health). Use the blueprint's task statements to create practice questions. Integrate pharmacology and health promotion throughout all topics.
