Veterinary Technician National Examination (VTNE) Practice Test

Eligibility is determined by the veterinary regulatory body in the state or province where you intend to become credentialed. Typically, you must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA)-accredited program or have equivalent education as determined by the board. You must submit an application and fee to the AAVSB and receive an authorization to test. It is crucial to contact your specific state/provincial board for precise requirements before applying.

The VTNE uses a scaled scoring system ranging from 200 to 800. A scaled score of 425 is required to pass. This scaled score is not a percentage but a statistical conversion that ensures consistency across different exam forms. You will receive a pass/fail result, and if unsuccessful, a diagnostic report indicating relative performance in each domain to guide future study.

Candidates are allowed a maximum of five (5) attempts to pass the VTNE. A minimum 30-day waiting period is required between the first and second attempts. After a second unsuccessful attempt, a six-month waiting period is required before the third attempt, and a one-year waiting period is required before any subsequent attempts. You must reapply and pay the examination fee for each attempt.

The VTNE is a computer-based test consisting of 150 operational, scored multiple-choice questions, plus 20 pilot questions that are unscored. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the exam. The questions are presented in a linear, fixed format and cover patient scenario-based knowledge, recall, and application across all nine domains.

VTNE certification is directly linked to licensure/registration, which is legally required to perform technical duties (e.g., inducing anesthesia, performing dental extractions, taking radiographs). Credentialed technicians (CVT/LVT/RVT) typically command higher salaries than uncredentialed assistants, have greater job security, and access more advanced career paths in specialties like internal medicine, surgery, emergency care, or management. It is a fundamental requirement for professional advancement and recognition.
