VTNE: Veterinary Technician National Examination Practice Test

Eligibility is determined by the veterinary regulatory board in the state or province where you intend to become credentialed. Typically, you must be a graduate of an American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) Committee on Veterinary Technician Education and Activities (CVTEA)-accredited veterinary technology program. You must submit an application through the AAVSB's Veterinary Information Verification Agency (VIVA) and receive an authorization to test (ATT) from your state board before scheduling your exam.

The VTNE is a computer-based exam consisting of 150 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 130 are scored, and 20 are non-scored pretest questions used for future exam development. Candidates have 3 hours to complete the test. The questions are designed to assess application, analysis, and problem-solving skills within real-world clinical scenarios.

The VTNE uses a scaled scoring system ranging from 200 to 800. A passing scaled score is 425. This scaling ensures fairness across different versions of the exam. You will receive a pass/fail result immediately after completing the test at the testing center, followed by an official score report from the AAVSB.

Candidates are allowed a maximum of five (5) attempts to pass the VTNE. There is a mandatory waiting period between attempts. You must wait 30 days after your first and second attempts, 60 days after your third and fourth attempts, and one year after your fifth attempt before re-applying through your state board.

The VTNE score itself does not expire; however, state licensure/registration (which requires passing the VTNE) must be renewed periodically, usually annually or biennially. Maintenance typically involves completing continuing education (CE) credits as mandated by your state's veterinary medical board to ensure you stay current with evolving standards and practices in the field.
