ABIM Endocrinology Diabetes and Metabolism Board Certification Practice Test

Candidates must hold current ABIM certification in Internal Medicine and have successfully completed an ACGME-accredited fellowship in Endocrinology, Diabetes and Metabolism. They must also possess a valid, unrestricted medical license and meet all ABIM requirements for licensure and professional standing. Specific procedural and clinical experience requirements as outlined by the ABIM must also be fulfilled prior to application.

The exam is a computer-based test consisting of up to 240 single-best-answer, multiple-choice questions. It is administered in four 60-minute sessions over a total testing period of approximately 10 hours, including breaks. The questions are designed to assess clinical judgment, diagnostic evaluation, and management strategies across the content domains specified in the official exam blueprint.

ABIM EDM certification is valid for 10 years. To maintain certification, diplomates must enroll in and complete the ABIM's MOC program. This involves ongoing activities in four core components: 1) Professional Standing (maintaining a valid license), 2) Lifelong Learning and Self-Assessment (earning CME credits and completing MOC assessment activities), 3) Assessment of Knowledge, Judgment, and Skills (passing a secure MOC exam every 10 years), and 4) Improvement in Medical Practice (engaging in practice-based improvement activities).

The exam blueprint is organized around major disease categories and essential competencies. The heaviest emphasis is on Diabetes Mellitus and its complications, Thyroid Disorders, and Pituitary/Adrenal Disorders. However, comprehensive knowledge is required across all areas, including Metabolic Bone Disease, Reproductive Endocrinology, Lipid Disorders, Obesity, Neuroendocrinology, and Endocrine Neoplasia. Questions frequently test the integration of basic science with clinical management and the interpretation of diagnostic studies.

The ABIM provides the essential starting point: the official "Exam Blueprint" and "Exam Policies" documents. These outline the precise content distribution and exam rules. While the ABIM does not endorse specific review courses or texts, successful candidates commonly utilize major endocrinology textbooks (e.g., Williams Textbook of Endocrinology), peer-reviewed journals for recent advances, and question banks focused on applied clinical knowledge. Review courses offered by professional societies like the Endocrine Society (ENDO) are also widely used.
