ABIM Nephrology Board Certification Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, valid ABIM Internal Medicine certification and have successfully completed a minimum of 24 months of training in an ACGME-accredited nephrology fellowship program. All training and credentialing requirements must be verified and approved by ABIM prior to registration.

The exam is a one-day, computer-based test consisting of approximately 240 single-best-answer, multiple-choice questions. These questions are primarily presented as patient-centered vignettes designed to assess clinical reasoning, diagnostic acumen, and management decisions across the entire nephrology blueprint. The exam is divided into multiple sessions with scheduled breaks.

ABIM Certification is time-limited. Diplomates participate in the ongoing Maintenance of Certification (MOC) program, which requires earning 100 MOC points every five years (including medical knowledge and practice assessment points) and passing a secure MOC assessment every ten years to maintain certified status and demonstrate commitment to continuous learning.

The ABIM publishes a detailed Nephrology Certification Exam Blueprint that outlines the precise percentage distribution of questions across major content areas. This blueprint is the authoritative guide for exam content and is available on the official ABIM website. It covers domains such as Glomerular Diseases, Acute & Chronic Kidney Disease, Hypertension, Electrolytes, Dialysis, and Transplantation.

Pass rates vary annually but are historically consistent with other internal medicine subspecialties. The rate is influenced by the cohort's performance. ABIM provides performance feedback relative to the passing standard. First-time takers from accredited programs typically have a higher success rate, underscoring the importance of rigorous fellowship training and dedicated preparation.
