While AHLEI does not enforce strict mandatory prerequisites, the CHT is designed for experienced professionals. It is strongly recommended that candidates have a combination of formal education in hospitality, business, or education and at least two to three years of practical experience in a hospitality training role, supervisory position, or operations management. This experience ensures you can contextualize the exam's principles within the realities of a hospitality environment.

The CHT is highly specialized. While generic certifications cover broad training fundamentals, the CHT integrates those fundamentals with deep hospitality industry knowledge. It focuses on the specific challenges of training a multilingual, often transient workforce, delivering service-centric soft skills, complying with brand standards and safety regulations (like food hygiene), and measuring training's impact on guest satisfaction scores (e.g., Net Promoter Score) and operational metrics. The CHT exam is a proctored, computer-based test consisting of approximately 100 multiple-choice questions to be completed within a set time limit (typically 2 hours). The questions are scenario-based, requiring application of knowledge, as well as direct knowledge recall. The exam is administered through AHLEI's testing network, which includes authorized testing centers and, in some cases, online proctoring options for convenience and accessibility.
