While AHLEI does not enforce strict mandatory prerequisites, the exam is designed for individuals currently working in or aspiring to hospitality security supervisory roles. Completion of AHLEI's recommended training programs or self-study using the official "Security and Loss Prevention Management" textbook provides the essential knowledge base for the exam.

The CHSS exam typically consists of 135 multiple-choice questions that must be completed within a 3-hour time limit. The questions are derived directly from the exam blueprint and cover all key domains of hospitality security supervision. The test is administered in a proctored environment, either at an approved testing center or via online remote proctoring, to ensure exam integrity and security.

The passing score is established using industry-standard psychometric methods. Candidates receive a pass/fail result immediately upon completion of the computer-based exam. Official score reports and certification details are processed and delivered by AHLEI following the testing session.

The CHSS credential is valid for five years. To maintain certified status, holders must earn a specified number of continuing education units (CEUs) through professional development activities such as attending relevant workshops, completing additional courses, or participating in industry conferences.
