ANCC Psychiatric-Mental Health Nursing (PMH-BC) Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, active RN license in the United States or its territories. Additionally, they must have practiced the equivalent of two years full-time as a registered nurse, completed a minimum of 2,000 clinical hours in psychiatric-mental health nursing within the last three years, and fulfilled 30 hours of continuing education in psychiatric-mental health nursing within the last three years. The PMH-BC is a professional board certification for registered nurses, including both generalist RNs and Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs). It is distinct from an academic degree. An MSN or DNP provides the educational foundation, while PMH-BC validates specialized competency through examination. For APRNs (e.g., PMHNPs), the PMH-BC can serve as an additional, recognized credential that demonstrates a commitment to the nursing board certification model, complementing their national nurse practitioner certification.

The PMH-BC exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions (150 scored, 25 unscored pretest questions). Candidates are allotted 3.5 hours to complete the exam. The questions are derived from the official test blueprint, covering domains such as Assessment and Diagnosis, Planning and Implementation (including psychotherapy, psychopharmacology, and group therapy), and Professional, Legal, and Ethical Issues. Questions are designed to assess application, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge in clinical situations.

The PMH-BC certification is valid for five years. To renew, certificants must meet specific renewal requirements set by the ANCC, which typically include a combination of continuing education contact hours (with a portion specific to psychiatric-mental health nursing), demonstrated professional development, and practice hour requirements. Trauma-Informed Care (TIC) is integrated throughout the exam blueprint as a fundamental practice philosophy. Candidates can expect questions assessing their ability to recognize the widespread impact of trauma, identify signs and symptoms in clients, integrate knowledge of trauma into policies and procedures, and actively avoid re-traumatization in therapeutic interactions. This includes applying TIC principles in assessment, crisis intervention, therapeutic communication, and treatment planning across all clinical settings.
