RDCS: Registered Diagnostic Cardiac Sonographer Exam Practice Test

To be eligible, you must satisfy one of two pathways defined by ARDMS: 1) Professional Education Pathway: Graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited diagnostic cardiac sonography program. 2) Experience Pathway: Hold a relevant allied health credential (e.g., RN, RRT, PA) and complete 12 months of full-time clinical ultrasound experience, or complete 24 months of full-time clinical ultrasound experience without a prior credential. All candidates must also pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) examination prior to or within five years of passing the RDCS specialty exam.

The RDCS credential offers three specialty examinations, allowing you to demonstrate expertise in a specific area: Adult Echocardiography (AE), Pediatric Echocardiography (PE), and Fetal Echocardiography (FE). You can earn credentials in one or multiple specialties. Each exam focuses on the unique anatomy, pathophysiology, and protocols relevant to that patient population.

Each RDCS specialty exam is a computer-based test consisting of approximately 170 multiple-choice questions, to be completed within 3 hours. The questions are based on the official exam content outline and cover domains such as Patient Care, Anatomy & Physiology, Pathology, Ultrasound Imaging Procedures & Techniques, and Physics & Instrumentation. The exam employs various question formats, including single best answer, multiple response, and image-based interpretation.

RDCS credential holders consistently report higher earning potential and greater job security compared to non-registered sonographers. Many healthcare employers, especially major hospital systems and academic medical centers, require or strongly prefer RDCS certification for hiring and promotion. The credential is essential for advancing into senior sonographer, lead, educator, or application specialist roles. It signifies a standardized level of expertise that is trusted across the industry.

The RDCS credential must be maintained through a continuous professional development program. You are required to earn 30 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits every three years. These credits must be related to the sonography profession and can be obtained through conferences, seminars, online courses, publishing, and teaching. This ensures certified sonographers remain current with evolving technologies, techniques, and clinical guidelines.
