ARDMS: Obstetrics and Gynecology Sonography Specialty Exam Practice Test

To be eligible, you must first pass the Sonography Principles and Instrumentation (SPI) exam. Then, you must meet one of three pathways: 1) Graduate from a CAAHEP-accredited sonography program, 2) Hold a relevant allied health degree plus 12 months of full-time clinical ultrasound experience, or 3) Hold a bachelor's degree plus 12 months of full-time clinical ultrasound experience. Specific documentation of clinical experience in OB/GYN sonography is required.

While both are RDMS specialties, the OB/GYN exam focuses exclusively on the female reproductive system and pregnancy. It covers first-, second-, and third-trimester obstetric evaluations (including fetal anatomy, biometry, and well-being), gynecologic sonography (uterus, ovaries, adnexa), and related Doppler applications. The Abdomen specialty exam focuses on non-gravid abdominal organs (liver, gallbladder, kidneys, pancreas, etc.), superficial structures, and male pelvis.

The OB/GYN specialty exam is a computer-based test consisting of approximately 120 multiple-choice questions. Candidates are allotted 2 hours to complete the exam. The questions are designed to assess application and analysis, covering image interpretation, clinical protocol, pathology, and safety.

The RDMS credential with OB/GYN specialty is valid for three years. To maintain certification, you must earn 30 Continuing Medical Education (CME) credits every three years and comply with the ARDMS Standards of Professional Conduct. A fee is required for the triennial renewal.

The exam blueprint emphasizes several key areas: First Trimester (anatomy, complications, dating), Fetal Anatomy & Biometry (comprehensive survey, growth assessment), Fetal Well-Being & Amniotic Fluid, Gynecologic Sonography (uterus, ovaries, pathology), and Pathophysiology/Clinical Considerations. A thorough understanding of normal and abnormal findings across all trimesters is critical.
