ASCP Phlebotomy Technician (PBT) Certification Practice Test

Eligibility is pathway-dependent. The most common route requires completion of a NAACLS-accredited phlebotomy program within the last five years. Alternative pathways include a combination of work experience (e.g., 1 year full-time in an accredited lab) and high school diploma, or completion of a structured phlebotomy training program during clinical professional education (e.g., RN, MLT). The PBT certification exam consists of 100 multiple-choice questions, with 80 scored questions and 20 unscored pretest questions. The PBT certification is valid for three years. To maintain certification, you must participate in the Certification Maintenance Program (CMP), which requires earning a minimum of 36 continuing education (CE) credits within the three-year cycle and paying a maintenance fee. These CE credits must be relevant to the phlebotomy practice and can be obtained through various approved educational activities.

The ASCP does not publish official pass/fail rates. The exam uses a criterion-referenced scoring method. Your performance is measured against a predetermined standard of competency, not against other test-takers. You will receive a score report indicating "Pass" or "Fail," and if unsuccessful, a diagnostic breakdown of your performance in each content area to guide future study.
