ASWB Bachelor Social Work Exam (BSW) Practice Test

The exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored and 20 are unscored pretest items. Candidates have 4 hours to complete the computer-administered test. Questions are primarily scenario-based, requiring the application of knowledge to practice situations. The exam is organized around the four major content areas of the official ASWB blueprint: Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment (27%); Assessment, Intervention Planning, and Implementation (27%); Interventions with Clients/Client Systems (24%); and Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics (22%).

Eligibility is determined by the specific licensing board in the jurisdiction where you seek licensure. Universally, candidates must hold a Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) degree from a program accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Most states also require the completion of a formal application to the state board, payment of fees, and, in some cases, a criminal background check. You must apply for permission to test through your state board, not directly through ASWB.

Thoroughly internalize the NASW Code of Ethics. Exam questions often present ethical dilemmas where multiple principles conflict. Successful navigation requires you to prioritize ethical standards (e.g., client self-determination, confidentiality, informed consent) and understand the hierarchy of decision-making. Practice applying the code to complex cases, focusing on the social worker's first and best course of action, which typically involves consultation, supervision, and adherence to core values like service and social justice.

Cultural competence is a cross-cutting theme integrated throughout the exam, not an isolated topic. You will be tested on your ability to conduct culturally sensitive assessments, recognize the impact of bias and oppression, and design interventions that respect and incorporate a client's cultural background, beliefs, and identity. Expect questions that require you to identify culturally responsive practices and avoid ethnocentric or stereotypical approaches.

The ASWB uses a criterion-referenced passing point, which is a standardized minimum competency level, not a curved score based on other test-takers. The scaled passing score is 75, but this is not a percentage. You will receive a pass/fail result at the test center immediately upon completion. A few weeks later, you will receive a detailed score report that breaks down your performance in each content area, which is invaluable if a retake is necessary.
