ASWB Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) Exam Practice Test

The LMSW exam is a four-hour, computer-adaptive test (CAT) consisting of 170 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 20 are unscored pretest questions used for future exams. The CAT format adjusts question difficulty based on your performance as you proceed. The exam covers the four major content areas outlined in the ASWB blueprint.

The exam is structured around four core domains, weighted as follows: Human Development, Diversity, and Behavior in the Environment (30%); Assessment, Diagnosis, and Treatment Planning (27%); Psychotherapy, Clinical Interventions, and Case Management (24%); and Professional Relationships, Values, and Ethics (19%). These domains encompass all key topics, including social policy, practice with systems of all sizes, and research.

The LMSW (Master's) exam is for entry-level, generalist practice, often under supervision. The LCSW (Clinical) exam is for advanced, independent clinical practice and requires post-master's supervised experience. The LCSW exam focuses more deeply on clinical assessment, diagnosis, and intervention, while the LMSW covers a broader range of generalist and macro practice topics. The LMSW is typically the first step before accruing hours for the LCSW.

ASWB uses a scaled scoring system ranging from 95 to 145, with a passing score of 75. This is not a percentage. The scaled score is derived through psychometric analysis to account for slight variations in difficulty between different exam forms, ensuring fairness. The passing standard is set by a panel of social work experts and represents the minimum competency required for safe, ethical practice.
