AWS CWI: Certified Welding Inspector Exam Practice Test

AWS requires a combination of education and hands-on welding or inspection experience. The most common path is a minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in welding, inspection, or related activities. This requirement can be reduced with higher levels of formal education in welding technology or engineering. For example, a Bachelor's degree in Welding Engineering or a related field requires only 3 years of experience, while an Associate's degree requires 4 years. All candidates must submit a detailed application with supporting documentation for AWS review and approval prior to registering for the exam.

The AWS CWI certification is valid for a 3-year interval. To renew, inspectors must accumulate a minimum of 80 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) during that period through activities such as attending technical seminars, completing relevant coursework, publishing papers, or participating in AWS section meetings. Alternatively, recertification can be achieved by successfully retaking and passing the full CWI examination prior to the expiration date. Maintaining an active certification demonstrates a commitment to staying current with evolving codes, standards, and industry practices.

The exam is a full-day, three-part proctored test. Part A: Fundamentals (150 questions, closed book, 2 hours). Part B: Practical Applications/Codebook (46 questions, open book using the specified code, 2 hours). Part C: Visual Inspection Practical (46-50 specimens, 2 hours). There are scheduled breaks between sections. The open-book portion tests the candidate's ability to navigate and apply the assigned code (e.g., AWS D1.1) efficiently, not just their memory of its contents.

The core codebook is AWS D1.1/D1.1M: Structural Welding Code - Steel. This is used for the open-book portion of the exam. For the closed-book Fundamentals section, you must study the AWS B1.10: Guide for the Nondestructive Examination of Welds, the AWS A3.0: Standard Welding Terms and Definitions, and the AWS QC1: Standard for AWS Certification of Welding Inspectors. A strong understanding of welding symbols per AWS A2.4 is also critical. AWS provides a detailed 'Body of Knowledge' document listing all required references.

CWIs are employed across a vast range of industries where welding quality is critical. Key sectors include: Structural Steel Construction (buildings, bridges), Petroleum & Petrochemical (pipelines, refineries), Power Generation (nuclear, fossil, renewable), Aerospace & Defense, Shipbuilding & Marine, Manufacturing, and Heavy Equipment. Career roles extend beyond field inspection to include Quality Control/Assurance Supervisor, Welding Engineer (with additional education), Third-Party Auditor, Independent Consultant, and Welding Instructor. Many CWIs work for engineering firms, fabrication shops, owner companies, or as independent contractors.
