BCOP Board Certified Oncology Pharmacist Exam Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current, active pharmacist license in the U.S. or another jurisdiction. The primary pathway requires completion of a PGY2 residency in oncology pharmacy or accumulation of at least 4 years of oncology pharmacy practice experience, with at least 50% of time spent in oncology activities. Alternatively, those with a PGY1 residency plus 2 years of practice, or those who are BCPS-certified with 2 years of practice, may also qualify. The BCOP exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored. Candidates are given 4 hours to complete the exam. Questions are application- and analysis-based, requiring integration of knowledge across domains outlined in the official BPS Oncology Pharmacy Content Outline. The exam focuses on real-world scenarios involving drug therapy management, patient assessment, and clinical decision-making.

The BCOP credential is valid for seven years. Recertification can be achieved by either passing the BCOP recertification examination or completing 100 hours of continuing education (CE) in oncology-specific areas, along with maintaining an active pharmacy license. At least 25 of the 100 CE hours must be from practice-based activities (e.g., teaching, precepting, QI projects). BPS provides detailed guidelines on acceptable CE categories.

A PGY2 residency provides advanced training, while the Certified Specialty Pharmacist (CSP) credential often focuses on operational and management aspects within specialty pharmacy. The BCOP certification is a post-training, experience-based assessment that independently validates a standardized level of clinical knowledge and judgment across the entire spectrum of oncology pharmacotherapy. It is a nationally recognized, portable credential that signifies achieved expertise, complementary to but distinct from training credentials.

The single most critical resource is the official 'BPS Oncology Pharmacy Specialty Certification Content Outline,' which details all exam domains and tasks. Primary resources include major oncology textbooks (e.g., DeVita, Principles and Practice of Oncology), current National Comprehensive Cancer Network (NCCN) Guidelines, ASCO and ASHP clinical practice guidelines, and peer-reviewed journals. Structured review courses offered by professional organizations like ACCP, HOPA, and ASHP are also highly valuable for focused preparation.
