BCPP Board Certified Psychiatric Pharmacist Exam Practice Test

Candidates must hold a current pharmacy license in the U.S. or another jurisdiction and complete one of two pathways: 1) Four years of practice experience with at least 50% of time spent in psychiatric pharmacy activities, OR 2) Completion of a PGY2 residency in psychiatric pharmacy. The practice experience must be post-licensure. Detailed requirements are specified by the Board of Pharmacy Specialties (BPS) and should be verified on their official website prior to application.

The BCPP exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored. Candidates are given 4 hours to complete the exam. Questions are designed to assess application and analysis, covering domains such as patient-centered care, drug therapy management, and healthcare systems. The format includes scenario-based questions, often involving complex patient cases requiring critical decision-making.

BCPP certification is valid for seven years. Recertification can be achieved through either passing the recertification examination or completing a professional development program (which includes continuing education and self-assessment activities) approved by BPS. The professional development pathway requires accruing a specified number of hours in psychiatric pharmacy-related continuing education to demonstrate ongoing competency and engagement in the specialty.

BCPP certification significantly enhances your scope of practice by formally recognizing your expertise, which can lead to expanded prescribing authority (in states with pharmacist prescribing laws), increased autonomy in clinical management, and a stronger voice in interdisciplinary team decisions. It fosters greater trust from psychiatrists, primary care providers, and other mental health professionals, often leading to more direct and collaborative patient care models, such as medication management clinics or integrated care positions.

The official BCPP exam blueprint is organized into major domains including: Neurobiology/Pathophysiology; Assessment and Evaluation of Patients; Disease Management (covering psychotic, mood, anxiety, substance use, cognitive, and other disorders); Pharmacotherapy; Special Populations; and Systems/Practice Management. Each domain contains specific tasks and knowledge statements that define the scope of the examination.
