Cambridge B1 Preliminary (PET) Practice Test

The Cambridge B1 Preliminary certificate does not expire. Cambridge Assessment English issues certificates that are valid for life, as they certify your language ability at the point of taking the exam. However, some institutions or employers may request a more recent certificate if significant time has passed, to ensure current proficiency.

The B1 Preliminary (PET) certifies an intermediate level of English (B1), focusing on practical, everyday communication. The B2 First (FCE) certifies an upper-intermediate level (B2), required for independent use in work or study environments, involving more complex language, abstract topics, and detailed argumentation. The PET is a stepping stone towards the FCE.

The exam reports results on the Cambridge English Scale. A score between 140 and 152 represents a 'Pass' at B1 level. Scores between 153 and 159 receive a 'Pass with Merit', and 160-170 is a 'Pass with Distinction' (which awards a B2-level certificate). Scores between 120 and 139 indicate a candidate is at A2 level and receive a 'Cambridge English Scale' certificate.

The PET is recognized globally by thousands of employers, educational institutions, and government departments. This includes many companies in the service sector, as well as for visa purposes in some countries (e.g., for certain UK spouse visas). It is always recommended to check the specific recognition requirements of the organization you are applying to.

The exam has four papers: Reading (45 minutes), Writing (45 minutes), Listening (approx. 30 minutes), and Speaking (12-17 minutes per pair of candidates). The total test time is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes. The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with two candidates and two examiners.
