FAA Aviation Mechanic Airframe Written Knowledge Test Practice Test

To be eligible, you must demonstrate you have the required knowledge through either 1) Graduation from an FAA-approved Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS) for the airframe rating, or 2) At least 18 months of practical experience with the duties and tasks of an airframe mechanic. You must then obtain authorization from the FAA, typically in the form of an FAA Form 8610-2, Airman Certificate and/or Rating Application, signed by an FAA Aviation Safety Inspector or Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME).

The test is a computer-based exam consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions, selected from the FAA's official question bank. You are allotted 2 hours (120 minutes) to complete the exam. A passing score is 70% or higher. The questions are presented in objective, multiple-choice format, often involving references to diagrams, graphs, or technical excerpts.

The FAA publishes the foundational study materials. The core references are the FAA's Aviation Maintenance Technician Handbook-Airframe (FAA-H-8083-31), and the Airman Certification Standards (ACS) for Aviation Mechanic Airframe, which details the precise knowledge and skill areas covered. Additionally, the FAA provides the official Airframe Mechanic Knowledge Test Guide, which includes the question bank and sample questions. Commercial study guides and question banks that are updated to reflect the current ACS are also widely used for preparation.

Passing the Written Knowledge Test is the first of three required evaluations. Next, you must pass the Oral and Practical Exam, administered by a Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). The DME will test your knowledge verbally and assess your hands-on skills on actual tools and aircraft components or training aids. Only after successfully completing all three elements-Written, Oral, and Practical-will you be issued your Airframe Mechanic Certificate (the 'A' rating) by the FAA.

The Airframe rating covers both fixed-wing aircraft and rotorcraft (helicopters). The certification blueprint includes topics specific to rotorcraft systems, such as rotor drives, flight controls, and vibration analysis. A mechanic with an Airframe certificate is authorized to work on the airframe components of both categories, provided they have received appropriate training for the specific tasks.
