FAA Aviation Mechanic Powerplant Written Knowledge Test Practice Test

To be eligible for the written test, you must demonstrate 18 months of practical experience with powerplant tasks, or graduate from an FAA-approved Part 147 Aviation Maintenance Technician School (AMTS). The AMTS path is the most common, as graduation automatically satisfies the experience requirement. You must also be able to read, write, speak, and understand English.

The test is administered via computer at FAA-designated Computer Testing Centers (CTCs). It consists of 100 multiple-choice questions selected from the FAA's test bank, covering all subject areas outlined in the Powerplant test standards. You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. A score of 70% or higher is required to pass.

Passing the Powerplant Written Knowledge Test is a mandatory prerequisite to schedule the final Oral and Practical examination with an FAA Designated Mechanic Examiner (DME). The written test assesses theoretical knowledge, while the Oral & Practical evaluates hands-on skills, application of knowledge, and regulatory understanding. You must successfully complete both to be issued your A&P Certificate with Powerplant rating.

A passing result on the FAA Powerplant Written Knowledge Test is valid for 24 months (2 years). You must complete the Oral and Practical exam within this period. If you do not, you will be required to retake and pass the written test again.

These should be supplemented with the FAA's test guide, which contains the official question bank.
