ISEE Lower Level Practice Test

The ISEE Lower Level is approximately 2 hours and 20 minutes long, plus a brief break. It consists of four scored sections and one unscored essay. The structure is: Verbal Reasoning (34 questions, 20 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (38 questions, 35 minutes), Reading Comprehension (25 questions, 25 minutes), Mathematics Achievement (30 questions, 30 minutes), and an unscored Essay (30 minutes). The test is administered in this fixed order.

The ISEE provides four types of scores: a raw score (number of correct answers), a scaled score (ranging from 760 to 940), a percentile rank (comparing the student to the norm group), and a stanine score (a broad ranking from 1 to 9). The essay is not scored but is sent directly to schools. Families receive a comprehensive score report detailing performance in each section and overall, which is also sent to the schools designated during registration.

A student can take the ISEE Lower Level once per testing season. There are three testing seasons annually: Fall (August-November), Winter (December-March), and Spring/Summer (April-July). This policy allows for up to three attempts within a 12-month admission cycle, providing flexibility while maintaining the integrity of the testing process.

The Quantitative Reasoning section assesses a student's ability to think mathematically, solve problems using logical reasoning, and understand quantitative concepts and relationships. It focuses less on computation and more on logic. The Mathematics Achievement section tests knowledge of specific, grade-appropriate math curriculum and procedures, requiring students to perform calculations and apply learned mathematical operations to solve problems.

Preparation for Verbal Reasoning should focus on two question types: synonyms and sentence completion. Building a robust vocabulary through systematic study (e.g., roots, prefixes, suffixes, and context clues) is essential. For sentence completion, practice is needed to understand logical sentence structure and to identify key words that signal relationships between ideas. Reading widely and regularly is one of the most effective long-term strategies for success in this section.
