ISEE Upper Level Practice Test

The ISEE Upper Level is approximately 2 hours and 40 minutes long, plus a 5-10 minute break. It consists of five sections: Verbal Reasoning (40 questions, 20 minutes), Quantitative Reasoning (37 questions, 35 minutes), Reading Comprehension (36 questions, 35 minutes), Mathematics Achievement (47 questions, 40 minutes), and an unscored Essay (30 minutes). The test is administered in a fixed order, and all multiple-choice sections are computer-adaptive in the context of the test form, meaning question difficulty is predetermined to provide a precise measurement of ability.

The ISEE provides four types of scores: a raw score, a scaled score (760-940), a percentile rank (1-99), and a stanine (1-9). The percentile rank compares your performance to the norm group of students in the same grade who have taken the test in the past three years. For competitive independent schools, stanines of 7, 8, or 9 are typically considered strong, though expectations vary by institution. The essay is not scored but is sent directly to admissions committees for review.

A student can take the ISEE up to three times in a 12-month admission cycle: once in the Fall (August-November), once in the Winter (December-March), and once in the Spring/Summer (April-July). Most applicants take the exam once in the fall of their application year. It is crucial to check with your target schools for their specific testing deadlines and policy on multiple scores.

The Quantitative Reasoning section focuses on problem-solving and logical thinking, assessing a student's ability to reason using quantitative concepts. It often involves interpreting data, recognizing patterns, and solving word problems with minimal calculation. The Mathematics Achievement section tests knowledge of specific, grade-level mathematical procedures and concepts, including algebra, geometry, and data analysis, requiring direct computation and application of learned rules.

Effective preparation begins with a diagnostic practice test to identify strengths and weaknesses.
