CPHQ - Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality Practice Test

NAHQ does not enforce strict prerequisites (like a specific degree or years of experience) to sit for the exam. However, they strongly recommend that candidates possess at least two years of experience in healthcare quality to have the foundational knowledge necessary for success. The exam is designed for professionals actively working in the field.

The CPHQ exam is a computer-based test consisting of 110 multiple-choice questions, of which 100 are scored. You will have 2 hours to complete the exam. The questions are based on the official CPHQ Content Outline, which covers eight domains: Quality Leadership & Structure, Information Management, Performance Measurement & Improvement, Patient Safety, Care Management & Transitions, Regulatory & Accreditation, Workforce Engagement, and Education & Training.

A multi-faceted approach is most effective. Begin by thoroughly reviewing the official CPHQ Content Outline and Handbook from NAHQ. Utilize the official CPHQ Study Guide and consider joining a study group or review course. Complement this with practical application of concepts in your daily work. NAHQ also offers practice exams and self-assessment tools that are invaluable for gauging readiness and identifying knowledge gaps.

The CPHQ credential is valid for two years. To maintain certification, you must earn 30 continuing education (CE) credits within each two-year recertification cycle and submit a recertification application with the associated fee. At least 20 of the 30 CE credits must be directly related to healthcare quality (Category I), with the remainder in general healthcare (Category II).

The CPHQ is highly respected and often a preferred or required qualification for senior quality roles within hospitals, health systems, consulting firms, and accreditation organizations. It demonstrates a standardized, verified level of expertise that employers trust. Knowledge of CPHQ domains aligns directly with the standards of The Joint Commission, CMS, and other regulatory bodies, making certified professionals integral to survey readiness and compliance efforts.
