NBRC Registered Respiratory Therapist Exam Practice Test

The CRT (Certified Respiratory Therapist) exam tests essential, entry-level competencies and is required for state licensure. The RRT exam is an advanced credential that builds upon the CRT, focusing on complex clinical decision-making, analysis of patient data, and management of critical care scenarios. You must pass the CRT before you can attempt the RRT.

The RRT credential is earned by passing two separate examinations: the Therapist Multiple-Choice (TMC) exam at a high-cut score, and the Clinical Simulation Examination (CSE). The TMC assesses knowledge, while the CSE presents dynamic patient management scenarios where your decisions affect subsequent questions and the simulated patient's outcome.

Success on the CSE requires practice with simulation software to become familiar with the format. Focus on developing a systematic approach: assess the patient thoroughly, interpret all data (ABGs, waveforms, imaging), establish clear goals, initiate appropriate therapy, and continuously re-evaluate based on patient response. Time management and avoiding over-treatment are key skills to practice.

For the TMC exam, you must achieve the 'High-Cut Score' to qualify for the CSE. The CSE is scored on a scale, and you must meet or exceed the passing standard set by the NBRC. The NBRC uses a criterion-referenced method, meaning your score is based on a standard of competency, not a curve against other candidates.

The RRT credential is valid for five years. You maintain it through the NBRC's Continuing Competency Program (CCP), which requires earning a specified number of continuing education credits or retaking the exam during each five-year cycle.
