NNP-BC: Neonatal Nurse Practitioner Certification Exam Practice Test

To be eligible, you must hold a current, active RN license in the US or Canada, and have successfully completed a graduate-level NNP program accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE) or the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). This program must include both didactic education and supervised clinical practice specifically in neonatal care. You must apply and be approved by the NCC before scheduling your exam.

The NNP-BC exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions, of which 150 are scored. You will have 3 hours to complete the exam. Questions are designed to test application and analysis, covering domains such as assessment, diagnosis, plan of care, and evaluation. The exam is based on the NCC's detailed test content outline, which is derived from a national job analysis of practicing NNPs.

The NNP-BC certification is valid for three years. Maintenance requires meeting Continuing Competency Assessment requirements, which include accruing a minimum number of continuing education (CE) contact hours specific to neonatal/women's health nursing and professional practice, and paying a renewal fee. The NCC uses a continuous certification model to ensure practitioners remain current in their knowledge and skills.

The NNP-BC certification is a national professional credential. While it is a core requirement for obtaining licensure as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) in most states, state licensure is a separate legal process governed by individual state boards of nursing. You must apply for an APRN license in the state where you intend to practice, and the NNP-BC credential is typically a mandatory component of that application.

The NCC provides an official Test Content Outline, which is the essential blueprint for the exam. They also offer an online Self-Assessment Examination (SAE) that simulates the test environment and provides detailed feedback on performance by content area. While the NCC does not endorse specific review courses, they recommend using the Test Content Outline as your primary guide and utilizing textbooks and resources from your accredited NNP program.
