PMI Program Management Professional (PgMP) Practice Test

Candidates must have a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate's degree, or global equivalent) with a minimum of 7 years of project management experience and 10,500 hours of project management experience, PLUS 6 years of program management experience and 10,500 hours of program management experience. With a four-year degree, the requirement is 4 years of project management experience (6,000 hours) and 4 years of program management experience (6,000 hours). All experience must be non-overlapping. The application undergoes a rigorous panel review audit for a select percentage of applicants.

While the PMP focuses on managing individual projects-scope, schedule, cost, and team leadership-the PgMP exam assesses strategic oversight of multiple related projects. The emphasis is on benefits realization, governance frameworks, managing project interdependencies, strategic alignment, and engaging with senior stakeholders. The PgMP requires thinking at a higher organizational level, focusing on 'why' the program exists (strategic benefits) and how to sustain those benefits, rather than the 'how' of delivering a single project output.

The PgMP exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 4 hours. Of these, 20 are pretest questions that are unscored. The questions are distributed across five domains: Strategic Program Management (15%), Program Life Cycle (20%), Benefits Management (15%), Stakeholder Engagement (20%), and Governance (30%). The exam utilizes scenario-based questions that require analysis, judgment, and application of the standards found in PMI's 'The Standard for Program Management' and other foundational resources.

After passing the application audit, candidates must successfully complete a Multi-Panel Review (MPR) before being eligible to schedule the exam. The MPR involves a global panel of certified PgMPs who blindly assess your documented program management experience based on your responses to the Program Management Experience Summaries in your application. Preparation is critical: write clear, concise, and comprehensive summaries that explicitly demonstrate your leadership in the five program domains. Use action-oriented language, quantify results, and clearly articulate your personal role in initiating, planning, executing, and closing programs, as well as realizing benefits.

Both certifications require earning 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs) every three years to maintain active status. However, the PgMP has a specific requirement within those 60 PDUs: a minimum of 35 PDUs must be earned in the 'Education' category, focusing on continuing education in program management and related topics. This ensures PgMP credential holders continuously advance their strategic and leadership knowledge. The remaining PDUs can be earned through 'Giving Back' activities (e.g., creating content, volunteering, sharing knowledge).
