PMI-SP: Scheduling Professional Exam Practice Test

PMI requires a secondary degree (high school diploma, associate's degree, or global equivalent) with at least 5,000 hours (approximately 2.5 years) of project scheduling experience and 40 hours of project scheduling education. Alternatively, with a four-year degree, you need 3,500 hours (approximately 2 years) of scheduling experience and the same 40 hours of education. These hours must have been accrued within the last five consecutive years.

While the Project Management Professional (PMP)(R) is a broad-based certification covering all aspects of project management (scope, cost, quality, risk, etc.), the PMI-SP is a specialist credential focused exclusively on the domain of project scheduling. The PMI-SP delves much deeper into the technical skills of schedule development, analysis, optimization, and control. A project manager might hold a PMP, while the lead scheduler or project controls engineer on their team would ideally hold the PMI-SP.

The PMI-SP exam consists of 170 multiple-choice questions, of which 20 are unscored pretest questions. You have 3.5 hours to complete it. The questions are distributed across five domains: Schedule Strategy (11%), Schedule Planning and Development (33%), Schedule Monitoring and Controlling (33%), Schedule Closeout (3%), and Stakeholder Communications Management (20%). The exam is based on the PMI Standard for Scheduling and the PMBOK(R) Guide.

The PMI-SP credential is valid for three years. To maintain it, you must earn 30 Professional Development Units (PDUs) in the specialized area of scheduling during that three-year cycle. These PDUs can be earned through continuing education, such as taking relevant courses, attending webinars, writing articles, or giving presentations on scheduling topics. This ensures certified professionals stay current with evolving best practices.

The PMI-SP is highly valued in industries where complex, time-sensitive projects are the norm and schedule performance is critical to financial and contractual outcomes. This includes Engineering & Construction, Aerospace & Defense, Government Contracting, Energy (Oil & Gas, Utilities), Information Technology, and Manufacturing. Typical job titles for holders include Project Scheduler, Planning Manager, Project Controls Specialist/Manager, Master Scheduler, and Cost & Schedule Analyst.
