TORFL I Сертификационный уровень (First Certificate Level / B1) Practice Test

The TORFL I exam consists of five subtests: 1) Vocabulary and Grammar (Лексика. Грамматика), 2) Reading (Чтение), 3) Writing (Письмо), 4) Listening (Аудирование), and 5) Speaking (Говорение). Each subtest is scored independently. To pass the entire exam and receive the certificate, a candidate must achieve at least 66% of the total possible points for the entire test AND no less than 60% on any individual subtest. This ensures balanced proficiency across all skill areas.

The TORFL is recognized by the Association of Language Testers in Europe (ALTE) and is the official standard for Russian language assessment worldwide. Primary uses include: admission to Russian universities for degree programs (typically requiring TORFL I or II), meeting language requirements for Russian citizenship or residency applications, fulfilling job requirements for positions involving Russian, and providing formal proof of proficiency for academic credit or professional development.

The TORFL certificate is valid for life. The exam is administered at officially certified testing centers globally, which are often located at universities, language institutes, or Russian cultural centers (e.g., Russkiy Mir Foundation). You must register and take the exam in person at an authorized center; it cannot be taken online. Schedules vary by center, so contact your local provider for dates and fees.

Effective preparation requires a dual focus: strengthening general B1-level language skills and familiarizing yourself with the specific exam format. Use official TORFL preparation textbooks and past exam papers to practice the exact task types (e.g., writing a formal/informal letter, listening for specific information in announcements, constructing a monologue on a given topic). Prioritize practice in time-management under test conditions and ensure you are comfortable with the grammar and vocabulary outlined in the official государственный стандарт (state standard) for B1.

If you fail only one or two subtests (scoring below 60%), you receive a certified statement of your results. You are then permitted to retake only the failed subtest(s) within two years for a reduced fee. Upon passing the retake, you will be issued the full TORFL I certificate. If you fail three or more subtests, you must retake the entire examination.
