CFRN - Certified Flight Registered Nurse Practice Test

To be eligible for the CFRN examination, you must hold a current, unrestricted RN license in the United States or its territories. While BCEN does not mandate a specific amount of flight nursing experience, it is strongly recommended that candidates have substantial clinical experience in emergency, critical care, or flight nursing to ensure familiarity with the high-acuity content covered on the exam. There is no formal prerequisite course; eligibility is based on licensure.

While both are BCEN credentials, the CEN validates expertise in the broad domain of emergency department nursing. The CFRN is specifically designed for the air medical transport environment. It includes all CEN-level emergency knowledge but adds critical, specialized content on altitude physiology, hemodynamic changes during flight, vibration and noise considerations, crew resource management in an aircraft, and the unique challenges of providing intensive care in a confined, mobile platform with limited resources and diagnostic capabilities.

The CFRN exam is a computer-based test consisting of 175 multiple-choice questions. Of these, 150 are scored, and 25 are unscored pretest questions. Candidates are allotted 3 hours to complete the examination. The questions are designed to assess application, analysis, and evaluation of knowledge through clinical scenarios, not just simple recall.

CFRN certification is valid for four years. Recertification can be achieved either by retaking and passing the CFRN examination or by meeting the requirements of the Continuing Education Recertification Option (CERO). The CERO pathway requires earning a minimum of 100 contact hours of continuing education relevant to flight nursing and clinical practice, with specific category requirements outlined by BCEN.
