LEED AP Homes Accreditation Practice Test

The USGBC strongly recommends that candidates have prior experience on a LEED project, preferably within the residential sector, before attempting the LEED AP Homes exam. While not a strict mandate, this practical experience is crucial for understanding the applied concepts tested. There is no requirement to hold the LEED Green Associate credential first, but it provides an excellent foundational knowledge base. The most successful candidates typically have direct involvement in the design, construction, or consulting phases of a homebuilding project.

The LEED AP Homes credential is a specialization focused exclusively on the unique protocols, verification processes, and credit requirements of the LEED for Homes and LEED for Multifamily Midrise rating systems. LEED AP BD+C covers a broader range of commercial and institutional building types. While there is overlap in core sustainability principles, the Homes specialization delves deeply into residential-specific issues like residential energy modeling (REM/Rate), mandatory blower door and duct leakage testing, and the role of the Green Rater, which are not covered in the same detail in the BD+C track.

The LEED AP Homes exam is a computer-based test consisting of 100 multiple-choice questions (plus unscored pretest questions) to be completed in 2 hours. The questions are application and analysis-based, requiring you to select the best course of action in a given project scenario. The exam is scored on a scale of 125 to 200, with a passing score of 170. You will receive a pass/fail result immediately upon completion, with a detailed score report showing performance in each credit category if you do not pass.

The LEED AP Homes credential is valid for two years from the date you pass the exam. To maintain it, you must earn 30 continuing education (CE) hours within two-year reporting periods. These hours must align with the credential's specialty, with a minimum of 6 LEED-specific hours and 3 hours dedicated to the LEED for Homes rating system. Hours can be earned through various activities, including courses, conferences, project work, publishing, and teaching related to green building and LEED.
