PANRE - Physician Assistant National Recertifying Exam Practice Test

The PANRE is the traditional, one-day, 240-question proctored exam taken at a testing center every ten years. The PANRE-LA (Longitudinal Assessment) is an alternative, newer option offered by the NCCPA that allows PAs to answer 25 questions quarterly (100 per year) online from home or office over a five-year period. Both pathways lead to recertification and maintain the PA-C credential. The choice depends on individual learning and testing preferences.

The PANRE cycle is ten years. To maintain continuous certification, you must pass the PANRE (or complete the PANRE-LA pathway) before the expiration date of your current certification cycle, as listed in your NCCPA portal. It is crucial to monitor your NCCPA profile and apply for the exam well in advance of your deadline.

Recertification involves two components: passing the PANRE and completing continuing medical education (CME). PAs must log 100 CME credits every two years, with a minimum of 50 credits being Category 1. Furthermore, over each ten-year cycle, PAs must complete specific credentials like Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and a designated number of credits in pharmacology. All requirements are tracked through the NCCPA.

The NCCPA provides a detailed content blueprint that outlines the specific percentage of questions from each organ system and task area. The exam is heavily weighted toward Cardiovascular, Pulmonary, Gastrointestinal, and Musculoskeletal systems, reflecting their prevalence in general practice. The blueprint also defines the proportion of questions assessing patient history & physical, diagnosis, management, and health maintenance. This document is essential for guiding focused study.

If you do not pass the PANRE, your PA-C credential will expire on its scheduled date. The NCCPA allows for retakes, but you must apply for and schedule a retake. You cannot practice as a PA-C after your certification lapses, which will affect state licensure and employment. It is critical to prepare thoroughly and, if necessary, utilize the NCCPA's score report to identify weak areas for targeted study before a retake.
